Item #71051a
American Pilsner Recipe Kit
Style: American Pilsner Beer   3.5% alcohol by wt. / 4.3% alcohol by vol.   color: straw golden

In the tradition of the American Mega-Breweries. Pale color, light body, and little hop presence. We use a special combination of malt extracts - made from malted barley and rice.  This recipe doesn't have any nasty off-flavors, because we don't use cheap corn syrup or glucose!  This lager ferments well at a wide range of fermentation temperatures, thanks to the special Tuborg family yeast strain. Good results can be achieved at temperatures between 50 and 74 degrees, so a good comfortable room or basement is all you need.

Recipes are available in 3 different formulas; (1) Malt Extract w/ Steeping Grains, (2) Partial Mash, or (3) All Grain.  CLICK HERE to learn about the differences. If in doubt, you should probably order Malt Extract w/ Steeping Grains.

The special malt extract we use is designed to give the beer a beautiful pale golden color. There are no nasty off-flavors, because we don't use cheap corn syrup or glucose! This lager ferments well at a wide range of fermentation temperatures, thanks to the special "Tuborg" family yeast strain. Item #71121a
Bock (Traditional Dark) Recipe Kit
Style: Traditional German Bock   5.1% alcohol by wt. / 6.3% alcohol by vol.   color: red-brown

A strong, full-flavored lager beer. Bock beer has big malty taste, deep copper color, and medium-full body. The flavors of malt and caramel dominate the moderate amount of hops used. There is no hop aroma. With 9.5 pounds of malt extract, we don't skimp on ingredients for our bock kits! (There are a lot of weak bock kits on the market.) This lager ferments well at any steady temperature between 48-65 degrees, but thanks to the "Tuborg" yeast strain we use, you also get good results at room temperature. Bocks fermented at room temperature will benefit from some extra bottle aging time.  Bock, like other strong lagers, benefits from cold aging. You should store the bottles at room temperature for at least 2-3 weeks while carbonation develops, then move the bottles to a cool place or into a refrigerator if you have space.

Recipes are available in 3 different formulas; (1) Malt Extract w/ Steeping Grains, (2) Partial Mash, or (3) All Grain.

Item #71131a
Bock (German Helles/Maibock) Recipe Kit
Style: German Helles Bock/Maibock   5.1% alcohol by wt. / 6.3% alcohol by vol.   color: golden

This is the strongest light-colored German beer style. Intense gold color with very crisp and clean flavor. Maibock is less sweet and a bit lighter-bodied than the darker traditional bock beers. Maibock also has a bit more hops, but the dominant flavor is still that of malt. With more than 9 pounds of malt extract, we don't skimp on ingredients for our bock kits! (There are a lot of weak bock kits on the market.) This lager ferments well at any steady temperature between 48-65 degrees, but thanks to the "Tuborg" yeast strain we use, you also get good results at room temperature. Item #71541a
Bock (Doppelbock) Recipe Kit
Style: German Doppelbock   5.9% alcohol by wt. / 7.4% alcohol by vol.   color: brown

This is a very strong, full-bodied lager beer. Doppelbock is the strongest of all German-style beers. Roasted malts contribute color to this beer, but the flavor is that of milder, sweeter malts. Alcohol content is quite high, and hop bitterness is just sufficient to prevent the malt sweetness from being cloying. However, hop bitterness is perceived as being low, while hop flavor and aroma are barely present.  With 11 pounds of malt extract, we don't skimp on ingredients for this one! (There are a lot of weak doppelbock kits on the market.) This is a very strong beer so the flavor will improve a lot with age, especially for the first 6 months. Store the bottles at room temperature for at least 2-3 weeks while carbonation develops, then move them to a cool location if you have one available.

Imported European noble hops are added for flavor and aroma.

Do you like Samuel Adam's Golden Pilsner?  This is our version of the new breed of Pilsner beers from American microbreweries.  Boston Pilsner isn't like the mass-produced beers the Mega-Breweries.  Boston Pilsner is stronger, with a deep golden color, with enough malt and hops in it to taste them!  The finest quality North American malt extract and grains are used to make Boston Pilsner.  Imported Noble hops are used exclusively for bitterness, flavor, and aroma.

Item #71161a
California Common Beer Recipe Kit
Style: California Common Beer   3.6% alcohol by wt. / 4.5% alcohol by vol.   color: amber

Do you like Anchor Steam? This is our recipe for the same beer style. We can't call it "steam beer" because Anchor Brewing Company has copyrighted the word "Steam," so the style is now called "California Common."  This is a special type of lager which is meant to be fermented at warmer temperatures. Although other lagers can be warm fermented, this one must be.  Temperatures between 65 and 72 degrees are ideal.  This beer has a brilliant amber color, medium-body, with nice full hop flavor and aroma throughout.

California Common (ULTIMATE) Recipe Kit
Style: California Common Beer   4.3% alcohol by wt. / 5.4% alcohol by vol.   color: amber

Do you like Anchor Steam? This recipe is in the same style, except this ULTIMATE version is stronger. We can't call it "steam beer" because Anchor Brewing Company has copyrighted the word "Steam," so now the beer style is officially "California Common." This is a special type of lager which is meant to be fermented at warmer temperatures. Although other lagers can be warm fermented, this one must be.  Fermentation temperatures of 65 to 72 degrees are ideal.  This Ultimate version has more of everything - more malt extract for greater body & higher alcohol content, and more hops. The result is a remarkably balanced beer that's strong and hearty without going over the top.

Item #71211a
Honey Brown Recipe Kit
Style: American Honey Lager   3.3% alcohol by wt. / 4.2% alcohol by vol.   color: light brown

This recipe kit has become extremely popular since we introduced it in 2000. The color of our Honey Brown really is light brown - unlike some commercial versions! The body is moderately light with a touch of honey. Rice syrup is added to the malt extract for crisp flavor and to keep the beer from becoming too heavy. Special brown roasted malt is used for color and toasted malt aroma. This allows us to avoid heavy caramel sweetness by lightening the load of crystal malt. The flavor and aroma of hops is quite modest.

Item #71241a
Kolsch Recipe Kit
Style: German-Style Kolsch   3.9% alcohol by wt. / 4.9% alcohol by vol.   color: golden

A very unique German beer style. This is a light-colored ale with medium body. The yeast used to make Kolsch gives the beer a characteristic dry, almost wine-like flavor. Although this is a special yeast strain, it does not require any special care; treat it just like any ale fermentation. The results will speak for itself. Hop flavor and aroma are moderate to low.

Item #71291a
Mexican Cervesa Recipe Kit
Style: Mexican Cervesa   3.6% alcohol by wt. / 4.5% alcohol by vol.   color: golden

Do you like Corona or Dos Equis? This recipe was an instant hit, and has remained one of our best sellers. It has a light golden color, with a flavor that's lively and refreshing on the palate. The body is light and delicate, making this a very easy-drinking beer. The strain of lager yeast used in this beer is tolerant of a wide range of temperatures, so even room temperature will give good results.  If you ferment the beer at room temperature, the flavor will smooth out if you can refrigerate your bottles for a week or two after giving them a chance to carbonate.  The "Cervesa" style is actually a new-world version of classic German beer. This is a great recipe to brew for your friends who aren't interested in exotic beer styles, but everyone can enjoy North Of The Border. You supply the limes!

Do you like Beck's Dark? Martinak Dunkel is a dark German-style lager that isn't heavy. It has a clean malty flavor and aroma, deep color, and moderately light body. The flavor and aroma of toasted and roasted malt are dominant, due to the moderate amount of German hops used in this recipe. This lager ferments well at a wide range of fermentation temperatures, thanks to the special "Tuborg" family yeast strain we use. Good results can be achieved fermenting at temperatures between 50 and 74 degrees, so a good comfortable room or basement is all you need.

Style: German Munich Helles   3.6% alcohol by wt. / 4.5% alcohol by vol.   color: golden

Do you like European Imports like Beck's, Heineken, or Lowenbrau? Tuckahoe Helles is a German-style lager with an easy-drinking, clean malt flavor, light golden color, and light body. This beer style has more flavor compared to the popular American pilsners. Hop flavor and bitterness are medium to low.  This recipe is lighter colored, and has less malt-sweetness than Oktoberfest style. This lager ferments well at a wide range of fermentation temperatures, thanks to the special "Tuborg" family yeast strain we use. Item #71281a
Oktoberfest (Marzen) Recipe Kit
Style: German Marzen/Oktoberfest   3.8% alcohol by wt. / 4.8% alcohol by vol.   color: amber

Steinful is an Oktoberfest in the more modern tradition of the style. That means it's designed to be crisp, clean, and golden-amber colored rather than dark and bitter. This is by far our most popular German-style recipe kit - it enjoys top-ten recipe status all year long. Oktoberfest has less hop bitterness than traditional German beers like Bavarian pilsner and Bohemian pilsner. The flavor is that of malt with a slight sweetness. Steinful ferments well at a wide range of temperatures thanks to the "Tuborg" strain of lager yeast we use. A steady temperature between 50 and 74 degrees will give good results. Beers fermented at the warmer end of the temperature range will benefit from bottle aging, especially if you can refrigerate the bottles for a week or two after they've had a chance to develop carbonation.

Item #71591a
Pennsylvania Lager Recipe Kit
Style: Historic American Lager   3.6% alcohol by wt. / 4.5% alcohol by vol.   color: golden amber

Do you like Yuengling Lager?  We developed Pennsylvania Lager in response to the incredible rise in popularity of this historic microbrew.  This recipe has more color and flavor than the beers from the big American megabreweries.  We use a special combination of barley malt extract, rice, and premium hops to make this recipe.  While this is a great beer all by itself, you can brew Pennsylvania Lager and Pennsylvania Porter to combine them in the glass for authentic Black & Tan.  Real Black & Tan flavor is derived from the combination of a lager and an ale, so you must ferment two separate beers to get it right.  You can also choose to combine the two beers at bottling time to create Black & Tan in each bottle.

Bohemian Pilsner is one of the classic German beer styles.  This recipe has a moderately light body with a hint of sweetness. Item #71371a
Pilsner (Czechoslovakian) Recipe Kit
Style: Czechoslovakian Pilsner   3.8% alcohol by wt. / 4.8% alcohol by vol.   color: golden

Do you like Pilsner Urquell or Budvar?  This is our version of the style that originated the Pilsner name.  Czech pilsner is a moderately-light bodied beer with golden color.  Imported hops from Czechoslovakia, Germany, and Poland are used for flavor and aroma.  Home Brewdvar uses a large amount of relatively low-power hops to achieve its highly-hopped flavor, so it's rich in secondary hop characteristics instead of just plain bitterness.  This recipe ferments well at a wide range of fermentation temperatures, thanks to the authentic Czech strain of "Tuborg" pilsner yeast we use.  Good results can be achieved at temperatures between 50 and 74 degrees, so a good comfortable room or basement is all you need.  Czech Pilsner that's warm-fermented will mellow out a lot if you give the bottles some cold lagering time in the refrigerator after they've had a chance to carbonate.

Item #71741
Schwartzbier Recipe Kit
Style: Schwartzbier   3.6% alcohol by wt. / 4.5% alcohol by vol.   color: Black

Schwartzbier is an interesting style, but not one you'll find for sale very often. It's almost completely black, yet medium light-bodied - completely unlike a stout or porter. The only one most of us can find in stores is Japan's Sapporo Black! Schwartzbier has a nice roasted malt flavor yet it's easy-drinking and refreshing, with much livelier carbonation than stouts or porters. This is a great beer to introduce lager-loving friends to "the dark side," and you'll like it too!
